I love beautifully manicured nails. There's something about a well-manicured hand that just screams “polished”—pun intended. But in all seriousness, you can tell a lot about a woman from how she takes care of her nails.

Most people don’t necessarily have nice nails. The nails beds may be short, nails may not grow, or they may be damaged from nutritional issues. A number of women choose to deal with the problem by getting a professional manicure or permanently ruining their nails with acrylics.

Don’t get me wrong I love a good mani-pedi and, when I can, I love pampering myself like that! However, I hate having acetone in my house. And frankly, nail polish and acetone do not fit into my chemical-free lifestyle. So I thought I'd share with you a few things that have helped me that may help you grow your own set of beautiful nails.

Beautiful nails start on the inside. So make sure you’re eating right and taking your supplements. Vitamin B, especially B6 (or Biotin as it's also known), is very important for good, strong nails. Young Living’s

One of my favorite little secrets is gelatin. Every so often I mix a package of Knox unflavored gelatin with a glass of orange juice and drink it. This gives me a collagen boost, which is great for my nails and hair.

I buff my nails until they shine. While it's on my list of things to do to find an all-natural option for nail polish, one can never beat a good buffing. That gets them nice and shiny and lasts longer than a coat of clear polish. I also like to square them off when I file just like I would have the girls do if I went to the salon. It’s just a little cheat with a big impact. That square shape has served me well.

True confessions: Recently my mom and I went for a mani-pedi and, in a moment of weakness, I was talked into a gel manicure. I found out the hard way that that is a deep dark rabbit hole and no one should go down it on a whim. Not only could I not take it off but it ruined my nails in the process. My nails are just now starting to recover from the gel manicure I got back in October. Granted my nails looked amazing, but the price that I paid was not worth it!

Now as I said before, it’s not that I never get a manicure. If I do get a mani-pedi it's usually for a very special occasion. And just so I don’t have to think or worry about what colors to choose, I always choose the same two: OPI Altar Ego for my nails and OPI Amore at the Grand Canal red for my toes.

I don’t like getting to the salon and feeling pressured. It should be a relaxing experience and you should come away feeling pampered. But having someone yelling at me to “Pick a color! PICK A COLOR!” stresses me out and has never led me to making a good decision. So I decided my colors once. And by choosing the same two, it keeps it simple and it’s another way I avoid decision fatigue.  Pro Tip:  If you choose a nail suite purchase them from a beauty supply shop.  You'll always be prepared for any chips or touch-ups needed.
