Have you ever walked past that store in the mall called White House Black Market? They’ve created an entire store based on two neutral colors—black and white.
Seasonally they’ll throw in a pop of color—pink in the spring, yellow in the summer, blue in the fall, red in the winter. Their window displays always catch my eye because of their simplicity and their basic neutral color palette.
I try to follow a similar model for my wardrobe. Why? Because choosing a simplified color palette simplifies your shopping experience, your look, and your life. It also helps to pull your capsule wardrobe together beautifully.
What’s a neutral color?
Generally, neutrals include colors like black, white, gray, and navy. But brown and tan also work well as neutrals and add a bit of warmth. They’re the beginning of a good wardrobe foundation.
These colors are considered neutrals because they blend well with, and even accentuate, just about every other hue of the color spectrum. So, to start, choose three of these colors for your foundation pieces—pants, skirts, blouses, etc. Then you can begin adding in pops of color.
Why neutrals are important
Choosing such basic foundation colors will help simplify your shopping process. This means you don’t have to stop and consider those hot pink pants since that’s not one of your neutral colors. Instead you can buy a hot pink jacket, scarf, or shoes with the comfort of knowing you have neutral pants or skirts to pair it with.
By having your go-to pieces in neutral colors, you simplify your look. Whether you want to be classic, professional, trendy, bohemian, or funky, using these pieces as the foundation will help you to build your look. It’s a simple trick of most style icons. Then that POP of color—such as a royal blue bag or cherry red pumps—will really stand out.
Simplify your life by investing in basic neutral pieces that’ll stand the test of time. You don’t have to stand in front of your closet every morning in angst wondering what to wear. Your foundation is set. Just think, ‘neutral foundation—pop of color.’
Curating a simplified, neutral color palette will not only help pull your capsule wardrobe together, but it’ll really make you stand out from the crowd. So simplify your shopping, your look, and your life by investing in basic, neutral pieces for your wardrobe.
